About Us
Smith Chapel African Methodist Church is located in the North Texas Conference of the 10th Episcopal District.
Our Presiding Bishop is the Rt. Rev. McKinley Young.  Our Episcopal Supervisor is Dorothy Young.  Our Presiding Elder of The Greater Dallas District is Dr. E. L. Wright, II.  Our Pastor is Rev. J. W. Ford.
In attempts to organize an A.M.E. church in Oak, Cliff, pioneers, Sis. Bertha Miles, Sis. J.M.E. Turner, Sis. Annie Poole, Sis. Elizabeth Harris and Bro. Elizah J. Cole by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and under the leadership of Rev. Garth began Smith Chapel A.M.E. Church.  The church was named for Rev. N. Smith.
In 1912, the church held services in a house on Gaston Road, now known as South Moore Street.  Later services were moved to Anthony Street in a brush arbor, then to a hall on Noah and Anthony Streets.  The church later moved to 1225 East Tenth Street.
The first pastor of this church was Rev. Hubbard.  the lot at 1225 East Tenth Street was purchased and paid for under the leadership of Rev. J.L. Johnson.  Under the leadership of Rev. Coleman, the tabernacle was torn down, and a building was erected.  The remodeling of this building was started by Rev. H.L. Boyd and completed by Rev. I.G. Greene.
Many ministers have made definite contributions to the growth and success of this Great Church of Allen, namely; Rev. Morgan, Rev. Brown, Rev. Franklin, Rev. Hickey, Rev. Bennett, Rev. Womack, Rev. Benns, Rev. Brock, Rev. J.R. McGee, and Rev. R.T. Thomas.  It was Rev. McGee who presented the proposal for purchasing the "Skyline Baptist Church" located at 2406 Childs Street and Rev. B.C. Brock completed the undertaking.  On June 12, 1958, the congregation entered the "new" Smith Chapel A.M.E. Church at its present location.
